DAVID BROZA & FRIENDS

AN ECCLECTIC MIX

The “Not Exactly Christmas Show”

Live from The City Winery NYC

Recorded December 23, 2020

Celebrating 25 years of the “Not Exactly Christmas Show David Broza brings together several special guests for an evening of stunning musicianship and artistry. The concert includes Broza’s signature fusion of his Israeli hits, Spanish flamenco, Cuban rhythms, American folk, and rock and roll.

New Album

The concerts follow the release of Broza’s latest album: EN CASA LIMÓN, produced by Grammy-award winner Javier Limón. Broza’s first endeavor at an all-instrumental guitar album, the album was recorded at the Casa Limón Studios in Madrid, Spain, a “magical place” where some of the world’s greatest guitarists, including Paco de Lucia and Tomatito, recorded their albums.

Eleven of the twelve recordings on the album were played using Paco de Lucia’s guitars.  The guitars had not been touched since Paco de Lucia passed away in 2014.

ISLE of KLEZBOS is a soulful, fun-loving powerhouse all-gal klezmer sextet, formed in 1998 by Metropolitan Klezmer drummer/bandleader Eve Sicular, touring festivals from Vienna to Vancouver, with broadcast credits from The L Word to CBSSunday Morning. Individual bandmate experiences, in genres from bebop to baroque and far beyond, enhance the group's fresh approach to Yiddish traditions: playful irreverence and deep respect. Klezbos collaborations have also featured singer/songwriter Jill Sobule, with her original musical adaptation of YENTL (debuted song cycle at Joe's Pub; 2015 performances to include Lincoln Center's David Rubenstein Atrium), commissions for artists as diverse as Kiki Smith and Scissor Sisters, and 16 annual KlezBiGay Pride shows with special guests including Lisa Kron, Jennifer "Circus Amok" Miller, Deb Margolin, and more. Stellar Klezbos lineup features alumnae of Juilliard, Eastman and Manhattan Schools of Music, as well as Harvard and the electro scene in Japan. Our debut disc, GREETINGS FROM THE ISLE OF KLEZBOS, was honored by the OUTmusic Awards. New album LIVE FROM BROOKLYN (concert recordings from Brooklyn Center of the Perfoming Arts), launched at Joe's Pub this spring, has been widely acclaimed. The band will also reprise Eve Sicular's "J. EDGAR KLEZMER: Songs from My Grandmother's FBI Files" musical documentary theater, in February at the Centenary Stage Company.

New Event- Berkeley, CA June 4, 2009

Thursday, June 4
Ashkenaz, 1317 San Pablo, Berkeley CA
Klezmer Céilidh
THE MAD MAGGIES and GO VAN GOGH
Doors at 8:00 p.m.; Show at 8:30 p.m.
$7

A Céilidh (pronounced kay-lee) is a traditional Gaelic dance party, from the days before discos and nightclubs. But the 2 bands tonight are anything BUT traditional, merging Klezmer, Ska, Celtic music and much more into their own unique, high-energy styles.

The Mad Maggies are some crazy musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area who play world-inspired, roots-driven rowdy folk fusion. Tonight’s show follows up on the recent release of their 3rd CD, “Skull and Magpies.” The Mad Maggies are Maggie Martin on vocals and accordion, clarinetist and whistle blower Rhian Robinson, tuba player Johnny Blood, alto saxophonist Adrian Gormley, trombonist Lawrence Jarach, J.X. Lovejones on tenor sax and clarinet, drummer Billy Dee Boom, bassist Lewis Wallace, and guitarist Gary Wium.

Bay Area klezmer band Go Van Gogh also doesn’t fit the usual categories. As the members explain, they’re “not your bubbe and zadie’s klezmer band. Call it country music, but we’re not sure what country. Music for a Middle Eastern Western, Balkan surf ska, with a Western Swing Ethiopian twist. Whatever you call it, we play it, and you can dance to it.”

The band’s roots trace back 15 years to a duo formed by Connie and Jesse Walkershaw for their original songs, with various band accompaniments. Eventually the lineup became Go Van Gogh, currently with Connie Walkershaw on soprano and alto saxophone, Michelle Walther on violin, Brad Bechtel on lap steel, Alex Roitman on accordion, Sam Tsitrin on guitar, Jesse Walkershaw on bass, and Kelvin Burton on drums. In concert Go Van Gogh’s repertoire includes original tunes, a century-old klezmer song written by a great-grandfather, and klezmer standards including “The Odessa Bulgar,” “Fun Der Khupe,” and “Be Happy Jews.”
